Publication of 2013 International Chinese Opera Seminar Papers

The publication was launch at the International Academic Chinese Opera Forum on 6 Sep 2014 at the National Library Board by Mr Choo Thiam Siew, CEO for Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
The publication 《戏曲在海内外的最新进展—2013年狮城国际学术研讨会论文集》is written in Chinese which comes in hard and soft cover version consisting of 283 pages. 2000 books were printed for the first batch.

Singapore Chinese Opera Festival

Chinese opera is a treasure passed down from our forefathers. As Chinese, it is an important calling for us to continue this rich tradition. The TAC holds this aim and plans to fulfill it step by step, through concrete measures, to effectively develop and transmit this traditional art form here. As such, we would like to hold an event that would be truly a cultural brand of our own – a  Singaporean Chinese Opera festival.

5-7, 12-14 Sep 2014

TAC had organised the first “Singapore Chinese Opera Festival 2014” on 5-7, 12-14 Sep 2014 held at Hong Lim Park. At this Festival, Singaporeans had got to enjoy quality performances by local and overseas opera troupes from the six opera genres – China Fujian Theatre of Peking Opera (Peking Opera), Thau Yong Amateur Musical Association (Teochew Opera), Hymn Rhyme Sing Opera Club (Hainanese Opera), Jing Xiu Arts Centre Opera Troupe (Hokkien Opera), MPCC Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club (Shanghai Yue Opera), Kong Chow Wui Koon Music and Opera Division (Cantonese Opera) and Traditional Arts Centre (Peking Opera), Besides live performances, public also enjoyed in Chinese Opera Film screening from various opera genres.

Ms Low Yen Ling (Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Social and Family Development & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Mayor, South West District) was the Guests-of-Honour.

11-13, 18-20 Nov 2016

TAC had organised the second “Singapore Chinese Opera Festival 2016” on 11-13, 18-20 Nov 2016 held at Kreta Ayer People`s Theatre and Kreta Ayer Square. At this Festival, Singaporeans had got to enjoy quality performances by local and overseas opera troupes from the Anqing City Huangmei Opera Art Theatre (Huangmei Opera), Xin Yue Yun Yue Opera Troupe (Shanghai Yue Opera), Nam Hwa Opera Limited (Teochew Opera), Singapore Chinese Arts Centre (Peking Opera) and Opera Works (Cantonese Opera), Besides performances, public also got a chance to enjoy at the pre-show workshop known as the “Chinese Opera playground”.

Mr Baey Yam Keng (Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth) was the Guests-of-Honour for the opening.

“International Academic Chinese Opera Seminar” were held on 16-17 Dec 2017 at the Central National Library – The Pod. Experts from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore were invited to present papers and conduct discussions on the interaction between traditional opera and modern developments. The Guest of honour is Mr Choo Thiam Siew-世界华人文化交流会总裁

”Talks by Famous Artistes” was organized on 12 Nov 2017 at the National Library Board – THE POD by Mr Huang Xinde. A renowned artiste from the Anqing Huangmei Opera Troupe which had tapped on the topic of his artistic career in Huangmei Opera. He had also discussed on the interaction between traditional opera and modern developments, especially the development of Huangmei opera outside China.

Apart from it, a two day “International Academic Chinese Opera Forum” were also held on 6-7 Nov 2014 at the Central National Library – The Pod, in conjunction with the “Singapore Chinese Opera Festival 2014”. Experts from China and Singapore were invited to present papers and conduct discussions on the interaction between traditional opera and modern developments.

The International Academic Chinese Opera Seminar 2013 was organized by the Traditional Arts Centre and was held on 3rd Nov 2013 at the Central National Library. This event was supported by the National Library Board of Singapore and partially sponsored by the National Arts Council. Mr Choo Thiam Siew, President for Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts was the Guest of Honour. This seminar examined the current situation of Chinese opera in South East Asia. 15 distinguished scholars, leading actors, directors, educators and promoters shared their views on recent developments of Chinese opera in different cultural environments.

“Chinese Opera Extravaganza” is a biennial event organised by TAC. The event had achieved to agglomerate various local and overseas troupes together for better strength to work ahead for the promoting of traditional arts and also to promote unity among the groups and to wider audience base for Chinese Opera appreciation.

“Chinese Opera Extravaganza 2017” was held on the 16-17 Dec 2017, at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium. Mr Wang Jiarong, Counsellor and Consul General, Embassy of the People`s Republic of China in the Republic of Singapore as Guest of Honour. The Huanggang Arts Academy (China) had showcased Huangmei Opera on 16 Dec 2017 and followed by the performance from the Things International Pte. Ltd (Hokkien Opera), Ping Sheh Singapore (Peking Opera), Kwok Sing Musical Association (Cantonese Opera), Qiongju Society of Singapore (Hainanese Opera), Nanyang Pho Leng Hui Kuan Teochew Opera Class (Teochew Opera), Sam Kiang Chinese Opera Troupe (Yue Opera) on the 17 Dec 2017.

“Chinese Opera Extravaganza 2015”

“Chinese Opera Extravaganza 2015” was organised on 7 & 8 Nov 2015 at the Kreta Ayer People`s Theatre. It is a showcase of an international Chinese opera troupe; Fujian Mingju Opera, and eight local and overseas mix genres of Chinese opera groups over the two days event. Ms Tin Pei Ling, MP for Macpherson was the Guest-of-Honour. Participated groups include Fujian Provincial Experimental Min Opera Theatre (China), Zhejiang Wu Opera research Centre (China), Ping Sheh Singapore, The Teochew Drama Association, Chinese Cultural Arts Centre, Xiu Yu Opera Troupe, Xin Yue Yun Yue Opera Troupe, Hua Yi Workz and Traditional Arts Centre (Singapore) Young People`s Opera Theatre.

“Chinese Opera Extravaganza 2013” was organized on the 5th November 2013, at the Kreta Ayer Peoples` Theatre. Mr Sam Tan Chin Siong (Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Mayor, Central Singapore District) as the Guest-of-Honour. Six local opera troupes of different dialect groups were invited to showcase an opera excerpts in the event. They are from Nam Hwa Opera (Teochew Opera), Chinese Theatre Circle (Cantonese Opera), Sim Siew Tin Hokkien Opera Troupe (Hokkien Opera), Qiong Ju Society of Singapore (Hainanese Opera) and Marine Parade Community Club Shanghai Yue Opera Appreciation Club (Shanghai Yue Opera).

Singapore Youth Opera Showcase

Initiated and organised by TAC to promote and encourage young people to learn and perform Chinese Opera, the “Singapore Youth Opera Showcase” has been held annually in August since 2013. It had provided a good platform for school`s pupils to showcase their talents and to learn from their counterparts. We believed that to revive traditional opera, we must begin with young Singaporeans. Early exposure is the best mean to nurture opera talents and audiences.
“Singapore Youth Opera Showcase” will undoubtedly provide a valuable experience for the targeted audience and young performers. We also believed that this encounter with the traditional arts will help the younger generation to appreciate their cultural roots and develop an interest in finer things in life.

”Youth Opera Showcase 2017” was held on 16 August 2017, at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium. Besides, overseas troupe from Beijing, China and Anhui, China were invited to perform at the showcase too.

“Youth Opera Showcase 2016” was organised on the 26 August 2016, at the Kreta Ayer People`s Theatre. Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Trade and Industry. Mayor, South West CDC as the Guest-of-Honour. Young performers from the Singapore Chinese Girls` School (Primary), Poi Ching School, CHIJ (Toa Payoh) and Xinmin Secondary School trained by the Traditional Arts Centre performed at the showcase. Besides, overseas troupe from the Jin Kun Arts Troupe of Jin Yuan Primary School (Beijing, China) and the Shi Zhao Yuan Primary School of Anqing City (Anhui, China) were invited to perform at the showcase too.

This event had provided opportunities for young performers to enhance their skills and knowledge of what they have learnt from school Chinese opera co-curriculum activities. The performing arts instill in the school’s students a sense of graciousness and appreciation of the rich culture and heritage of a multi-racial society.

Four local schools participated in the event and each school showcased an opera excerpt in the Huangmei style. These young performers from Singapore Chinese Girls` School (Primary), Poi Ching School, CHIJ (Toa Payoh) and Xinmin Secondary School.

Six local schools participated in the event and each school showcased an opera excerpt in the Huangmei style. The young performers from Singapore Chinese Girls` School (Primary), Poi Ching School, Hai Sing Catholic School, North Vista Secondary School, CHIJ (Toa Payoh) and Xinmin Secondary School were trained by the Traditional Arts Centre during their school CCA in 2014. Besides, young performers from the Traditional Arts Centre (Singapore) Young People`s Opera Theatre had also put up a Teochew excerpts “Love song” extracted from “The story of Chun Xiang”.

The young performers from Singapore Chinese Girls` School (Primary), Hai Sing Catholic School, North Vista Secondary School, CHIJ (Toa Payoh) and Xinmin Secondary School were trained by the Traditional Arts Centre during their school CCA in 2013.

Mr Choo Thiam Siew, President, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts was invited as the Guest-of-honour. Mr Xiao Chan Zhang, Embassy of the People`s Republic of China in the Republic of Singapore and Ms Tsai Hsin Hsin, principal of the Taiwan Academy Arts School as well as invited guests from cultural organisation were also presence to view the auspicious occasion.
